Young Carers

Looking After Yourself

When you spend a lot of time helping someone else, it’s easy to forget about your own needs.

As a young carer, you may spend time worrying about the person you care for, helping around the house, looking after brothers and sisters, or supporting your family in lots of different ways.

Whilst caring for someone can be rewarding, it is important to remember that your wellbeing matters too.

Looking after yourself helps you stay healthy, happy, and able to cope with the challenges that caring can sometimes bring.

It’s OK to Take a Break

Many young carers feel guilty about taking time for themselves. The truth is that everyone needs a break sometimes. Taking time to:

  • Relax
  • Spend time with friends
  • Enjoy hobbies
  • Play sport
  • Listen to music
  • Watch a film
  • Simply rest

can help you recharge and feel more positive.

Taking a break does not mean you care any less about the person you support.

Looking After Your Mental Wellbeing

Being a young carer can sometimes feel stressful. You might feel:

  • Worried
  • Anxious
  • Frustrated
  • Overwhelmed
  • Lonely
  • Sad
  • Angry

These feelings are completely normal.

Talking about how you feel can help you understand your emotions and prevent problems from building up.

Remember, you do not have to deal with everything on your own.

Talk to Someone You Trust

Sharing your thoughts and feelings can make a big difference. You could talk to:

  • A parent or family member
  • A friend
  • A teacher
  • A Young Carer Support Worker
  • A counsellor
  • Another trusted adult

Sometimes simply talking things through can help you feel less worried and more supported.

Stay Connected with Friends

Friendships are important. Spending time with friends helps you:

  • Have fun
  • Relax
  • Build confidence
  • Feel supported
  • Take a break from caring responsibilities

Even if you can’t see friends as often as you’d like, staying connected through messages, calls, clubs, or activities can help you feel less isolated.

Looking After Your Physical Health

Your body needs looking after too. Try to:

  • Eat regular meals
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Get enough sleep
  • Stay active
  • Spend time outdoors

Small healthy habits can help improve your energy, mood, and overall wellbeing.

Remember What Makes You Happy

It’s important to make time for things that you enjoy. Everyone is different, but this could include:

  • Sport
  • Gaming
  • Art
  • Music
  • Reading
  • Spending time with friends
  • Clubs and activities

Doing things you enjoy helps you relax and gives you something positive to focus on.

Don’t Put Too Much Pressure on Yourself

Young carers often take on a lot of responsibility. Sometimes you may feel like you need to do everything perfectly. The truth is:

  • Nobody is perfect
  • Everyone makes mistakes
  • Some days are harder than others
  • Asking for help is okay

Be kind to yourself and recognise all the amazing things you already do.
