Carer’s Assessments

Providing care for a family member, friend, or loved one can have a significant impact on many areas of your life. A Carer’s Assessment helps identify how your caring responsibilities affect your wellbeing and whether additional support may be available to help you manage your caring role.

At North Staffs Carers, we can help you understand the Carer’s Assessment process and support you in accessing the assessment through your local authority.

What Is a Carer’s Assessment?

A Carer’s Assessment is an opportunity to discuss how caring affects your life and identify any support you may need.

If you provide care or support to someone and it appears you may have needs of your own, you have the right to request a Carer’s Assessment from your local authority.

The assessment focuses on your needs as a carer and considers how your caring responsibilities impact your daily life, health, wellbeing, and future goals.

Who Can Have a Carer’s Assessment?

You are entitled to a Carer’s Assessment regardless of:

  • The amount of care you provide
  • The type of care you provide
  • Your financial circumstances
  • Whether you live with the person you care for

You may also be balancing:

  • Employment
  • Education
  • Family responsibilities
  • Other commitments

These factors will be considered as part of your assessment.

You can request a Carer’s Assessment whether or not:

  • The person you care for has had a Needs Assessment
  • The person you care for receives support from the council

What Will the Assessment Involve?

The assessment is a conversation about your caring role and how it affects your life. The local authority will consider:

  • The impact of caring on your wellbeing
  • Your physical health
  • Your mental and emotional wellbeing
  • Your ability to work or study
  • Your relationships and social life
  • The outcomes you would like to achieve in your daily life

The aim is to gain a clear understanding of your circumstances and identify any support that may help you continue caring while maintaining your own wellbeing.

Can Assessments Be Carried Out Together?

If both you and the person you care for agree, the local authority may undertake a combined assessment.

This allows both your needs and the needs of the person you care for to be considered at the same time.

Where caring responsibilities are shared, each carer has the right to receive their own individual assessment.

This includes young carers under the age of 18, who may be entitled to an assessment under relevant legislation.

How Can a Carer’s Assessment Help Me?

Following the assessment, the local authority will determine whether you have eligible needs for support.

Depending on your circumstances, support may include:

  • Information and advice
  • Access to support services
  • Practical assistance
  • Respite opportunities
  • Support groups
  • A personal budget
  • Signposting to specialist organisations

Every assessment is individual, and support will depend on your personal circumstances and identified needs.
