Putting Carers First

How We Work

North Staffs Carers exists to support unpaid carers across North Staffordshire. We work with adult carers, young carers, families, professionals and local organisations to help carers feel recognised, listened to and supported.

Every caring situation is different. Some carers need practical guidance. Others may need emotional support, time to talk, help understanding their rights, or support accessing services. Our role is to help carers understand what support is available and connect them with the right help at the right time.

A Carer-Led Approach

We start by listening. When someone contacts North Staffs Carers, we aim to understand their caring role, their circumstances, and what matters most to them.

This helps us provide support that is relevant, respectful and tailored to the individual.

Our support may include:

  • Information and advice
  • One-to-one support
  • Emotional reassurance
  • Counselling
  • Befriending
  • Support groups
  • Young carer support
  • Help understanding rights and assessments
  • Signposting to specialist services
  • Support to access local and national resources

Supporting Carers at Every Stage

People may come to us at different points in their caring journey. Some may have only recently started caring. Others may have been caring for many years without recognising themselves as carers.

We help carers:

  • Understand their caring role
  • Access information and guidance
  • Explore practical support options
  • Improve wellbeing
  • Connect with others
  • Understand their rights
  • Find services that may help them and the person they care for

Our aim is to make support easier to access and less overwhelming.

Working with Adult Carers and Young Carers

We support carers of different ages and circumstances. Adult carers may be supporting a partner, parent, friend, neighbour or family member.

Young carers may be helping care for a parent, sibling or another family member while also balancing school, friendships and growing up.

We recognise that adult carers and young carers may need different types of support, so our services are shaped around the needs of the person seeking help.

Working in Partnership

Carers often interact with a range of services, including healthcare, social care, education, employers and community organisations.

We work in partnership with professionals and local services to improve awareness, strengthen referral pathways and help carers access support more easily.

This includes working with:

  • GP practices
  • Health and social care professionals
  • Social prescribers
  • Schools and education providers
  • Community organisations
  • Carer groups
  • Local partner organisations

By working together, we can help more carers be identified earlier and connected to the support they need.

Raising Awareness of Carers

Many carers remain hidden because they do not recognise themselves as carers or are unsure where to turn for help.

A key part of our work is raising awareness of unpaid caring and helping professionals, employers and communities understand the challenges carers may face. We do this through:

  • Carer awareness training
  • Talks and presentations
  • Professional partnerships
  • GP practice support
  • Community engagement
  • Information sharing
  • Referral support

Raising awareness helps ensure carers are seen, valued and supported.

Confidential, Respectful and Supportive

We understand that caring can involve sensitive and personal situations.

Our approach is confidential, respectful and non-judgemental. We aim to create a safe space where carers can talk openly, ask questions and explore support options.

Whether someone needs a short conversation or ongoing support, we are here to listen and help.

Helping Carers Stay Connected

Caring can sometimes feel isolating. Through groups, activities, befriending, events and community links, we help carers connect with others who understand their experiences.

These connections can improve wellbeing, reduce loneliness and help carers feel part of a wider support network.

Improving Outcomes for Carers

Everything we do is focused on improving outcomes for carers and the people they support. This means helping carers:

  • Feel less isolated
  • Understand their rights
  • Access timely support
  • Improve wellbeing
  • Build confidence
  • Manage caring responsibilities
  • Stay connected to their community

We know that when carers are supported, families and communities are stronger too.
