Young Carers

Young Carers Counselling

Being a young carer can bring many different emotions. You may sometimes feel worried, frustrated, overwhelmed, lonely, confused, or upset about what is happening in your life. Whilst these feelings are completely normal, it can help to have someone independent to talk to who will listen and support you without judgement.

Our Young Carers Counselling Service provides a safe, confidential space where young carers can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a way that feels comfortable for them.

What Is Counselling?

Counselling gives you the opportunity to talk about what is happening in your life and how you are feeling. There is no right or wrong way to use your counselling sessions. Some young people choose to:

  • Talk about what’s happening at home
  • Discuss worries or concerns
  • Explore difficult emotions
  • Build confidence
  • Learn ways to manage stress
  • Work through challenges related to their caring role

Your counsellor will work alongside you and support you at your own pace.

Express Yourself in Your Own Way

Not everyone finds it easy to talk about their feelings. That’s why our counselling service offers a range of creative ways to help young people express themselves. You might choose to use:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Writing
  • Creative activities
  • Sand trays
  • Masks
  • Other materials available within the counselling room

You decide what feels right for you.

Because it’s your session, your time, and your feelings, you are always in control of how you choose to express yourself.

Confidential and Supportive

We understand that trust is important. Counselling sessions are confidential, which means that what you talk about will stay between you and your counsellor. During your first session, your counsellor will explain:

  • How counselling works
  • What confidentiality means
  • The situations where they may need to involve someone else to keep you or another person safe

Outside of these safeguarding situations, it is your choice what you share with other people about your counselling experience.

It’s OK to Feel the Way You Do

Being a young carer can sometimes feel challenging, stressful, or lonely. You may feel:

  • Sad
  • Angry
  • Frustrated
  • Anxious
  • Confused
  • Isolated

These feelings are normal and understandable. Although things may feel difficult right now, support is available and things can get better.

Counselling can help you understand your emotions, develop coping strategies, and build confidence in managing the challenges you face.

You’re Not Alone

Many young carers feel that nobody truly understands what they are going through.

The reality is that there are many other young people who have caring responsibilities and experience similar feelings.

Alongside counselling, young carers may also have opportunities to connect with others through groups and activities where they can share experiences, build friendships, and realise they are not alone.

Supporting Your Emotional Wellbeing

Counselling can help young carers:

  • Understand their feelings
  • Build emotional resilience
  • Improve confidence and self-esteem
  • Manage stress and anxiety
  • Develop healthy coping strategies
  • Feel listened to and understood
  • Improve overall wellbeing

Every young person is different, and support is always tailored to individual needs.
