North Staffs Carers is looking for caring, friendly volunteers to join our Befriending Service and provide regular telephone support to unpaid carers across North Staffordshire.
Many carers experience loneliness and isolation as a result of their caring responsibilities. A simple phone call can make a significant difference to someone’s wellbeing.
As a Volunteer Befriender, you will provide friendly, supportive telephone conversations to carers who may benefit from regular social contact and a listening ear.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Making regular telephone calls to assigned carers
- Providing companionship and emotional support
- Building positive and supportive relationships
- Encouraging carers to access available support services where appropriate
- Keeping brief records of contact made
- Working within North Staffs Carers’ volunteer guidelines and confidentiality requirements
What’s Involved?
The role is flexible and can fit around your existing commitments.
Calls may take place:
- Weekly
- Fortnightly
- Monthly
depending on the needs of the carer and your availability.
Because the role is telephone-based, you can volunteer from the comfort of your own home.

No previous experience is required as full training and support will be provided.

About North Staffs Carers
North Staffs Carers supports unpaid adult carers and young carers across North Staffordshire. We provide advice, one-to-one support, counselling, support groups, wellbeing services, and practical guidance to help carers maintain their wellbeing and continue in their caring role.
Time Commitment
Flexible – typically 1–3 hours per month, depending on your availability and the number of carers you support.
Reference & DBS Requirements
Successful applicants may be asked to provide references and complete any appropriate checks required for the role.
